I was at a meetup with an author who'd traditionally published their first book and had NYT reviews, bookstore readings ,etc etc - but who's decided to self-publish the second. That author told us that, even with an agent and publisher, the work around doing publicity, socials, organising signings and readings was all still on the author's back. They told us, bewildered, that they couldn't even understand what value the agent and publisher had been. So yeah, bring this baby into the world. And - nerd alert!- I used to teach sex/gender/sexuality at Uni in UK, and as I read your words I felt the book 'Beautiful Bottom, Beautiful Shame: Where “Black” Meets “Queer” https://g.co/kgs/Lif1cXN coming to mind. We need to hear Black queer voices from the South of the USA. Let's hear this!
